I was born in Beaufort, SC, while my father served in the Marine Corps at Paris Island, the product of a brief and unhappy marriage between two young Seattle natives. My mother, married at 16, a mother at 18 and a divorcee in her early 20's, raised me on her own in the city of Seattle. Like many twenty-something women in the 70's, my mom lived a life of rock festivals, drugs and free love. Unlike most children, I learned the facts of the birds and bees at an early age and was never taught to feel any shame about nudity or sex. Despite the hippie liberal environment in which I was raised, I showed an early entrepreneurial streak and was always strongly encouraged to achieve financial independence. At the age of 5, I began drawing pictures, rolling them up, affixing prices and touring around the neighborhood on my tricycle to sell them to the neighbors. Then I started picking flowers in the neighbor's yards and tooling around the block peddling bouquets. Somehow, the fact that I was often selling the neighbors their own flowers didn't seem to matter. I was a born entrepreneur who was told by my mother almost from day one that "MONEY = FREEDOM." And I knew, even in my single-digits, that freedom was what I wanted. |
